MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS COORDINATOR  
DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS

DESCRIPTION: LRSWMD is hiring a skilled technical and manual worker for the daily operations of District Facilities who will be responsible for identifying and addressing all routine maintenance of LRSWMD facilities. The person in this role will maintain all equipment associated with the collection and handling of municipal solid waste, recyclables and all other special wastes. The position requires both indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions typical of the northeast. Moderate to strenuous physical activity is required and expected daily. All LRSWMD employees are required to work safely and bring unsafe conditions to the attention of the District Manager promptly. All LRSWMD employees are required to treat customers and other staff courteously, work as a team, and support the mission of LRSWMD. This position is under the direct supervision of the District Manager. 

DISTRICT MISSION: Our mission is to reduce the quantity and toxicity of the trash generated and going to the landfill while maintaining or improving overall environmental quality (air, water, and soil), treating customers and employees with respect, and operate within a balanced budget. 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: 

  1. Compile and keep up to date an inventory of all LRSWMD operations assets including tools, heavy equipment, vehicles, compactors, rolling stock, buildings, safety equipment, etc. 

  2. Establish and keep up to date maintenance needs for all assets on that list to ensure all LRSWMD capital assets are maintained within their warranty and beyond.   

  3. Create a schedule and populate Outlook or other shared calendar for the routine maintenance needs and regularly. 

  4. Monitor email daily for seamless communications with team.   

  5. Provide weekly summary of tasks through email every Monday to Manager and outline complete task from the week before and anticipated workload for following week to ensure balance in workload and coordination of efforts and logistics. 

  6. Work with Manager on routine replacement of compactors and other equipment, based on age of equipment, site needs and practicality. 

  7. Make note of damage or loss of District tools and other equipment and report it to the Manager.  

  8. When maintenance tasks fall outside the employees training and skill set discuss with Manager what expertise is needed and when. This may entail hiring outside contractors such as plumbers or electricians or investing in additional internal training. 

  9. Assist with the preparation or procurement of training materials and procedures to train staff on operational and/or safety systems. 

  10. Review safety and training with site staff to ensure any changes or modifications are communicated across all staff including management 

  11. Assist with the preparation or procurement of training materials and procedures to train staff on operational and/or safety systems 

  12. Obtain proper training and document in personnel file before operating or working on equipment or using tools. 

  13. Ensure safe working conditions such as snow removal, sand/salt icy areas. Sweep, clean up spills and waste from and around work areas.  Keep stations, work bench, customer and staff access safe and well organized. 

  14. Create an inspection sheet for each facility for use in quarterly inspections to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and identify maintenance and health and safety concerns. 

  15. Collect and drop off supply needs at all transfer Stations, in cases where other Staff is traveling to or from a site, coordinate with staff to pick-up or drop off supplies. 

  16. Make purchases authorized by the Manager commensurate with achieving tasks above notwithstanding routine purchases of supplies. Submit receipts for all purchases including class and line item for each. 

  17. Train and re-train staff on baling operation, bobcat, loader, and other heavy equipment at each transfer station. Document when training is complete and report to Manager 

  18. Work with Office Staff to organize and successfully operate the 2 yearly District HHW events and be on-site both events. 

  19. Other duties as they arise 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: 

  1. Read and sign-off on Employee Policy Manual and Transfer Station Operators manual and review annually. Document in personnel folder. 

  2. Fill out training log on all aspects of operations you have been trained on and send copy to the office. Email Manager of completed training. 

  3. Request training if it is not provided or if special circumstances are needed to assist in proper training. 

  4. Avoid training others unless you are specifically qualified to do so, and Manager approves. 

  5. Always Wear Highly Visible safety clothing and protective footwear while on the Job.  

  6. Perform other pertinent tasks as assigned by the Manager. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  1. Ability to work and complete all duties independently at other locations where you may be the only person on-site. 

  2. Ability to function under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a helpful and positive attitude. 

  3. Ability to work in all weather conditions. 

  4. Ability to follow all policies and rules of the district. 

  5. Ability to communicate clearly and directly with appropriate staff to ensure safe operations and achieve the mission of the District. 

  6. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and be a high school graduate or have a GED. 

  7. Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
